extraordinary ministers QUESTION from Kimberly July 13, 1999
On the weekends, in our parish, extraordinary ministers (who are always listed in the bulletin as Eucharistic Ministers) ALWAYS remove the consecrated host from the tabernacle which is located very near the altar. In addition to our priest, there is a deacon present, so I don't understand this particular action. Is it authorized? Thank you. ANSWER by Mr. John Miskell on August 24, 1999
Dear Kimberly, Thank you for your question. While it is clear that the priest and deacon are the Ordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, I'm not aware of a specific rubric which would prohibit the Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist from removing the Eucharist from the Tabernacle in the presence of the priest / deacon.
