Illinois Moment of Silence in Schools Ruled Unconstitutional
quote:CHICAGO (Associated Press) — A federal judge has ruled that a state law requiring a moment of silence in public schools across Illinois is unconstitutional, saying it crosses the line separating church and state. The statute is a subtle effort to force students at impressionable ages to contemplate religion, U.S. District Judge Robert W. Gettleman said in his ruling Wednesday. The ruling came in a lawsuit designed to bar schools from enforcing the Illinois Silent Reflection and Student Prayer Act. It was filed by talk show host Rob Sherman, an outspoken atheist, and his daughter, Dawn, a high school student.Source: FoxNews.com
Sounds like the beginnings of thoughtcrime. We can't have kids thinking about religion at school, so we need to make sure they don't have a moment of silence that might encourage that.

A Moment of Silence hardly forces students to contemplate religion. That judge is an idiot and deserves a Hall of Shame notice. The boys are probably contemplating the babes and the girls contemplating the hunks.

We have a one-minute moment of silence following the pledge each morning in Georgia schools; I wonder if this ruling will have an effect in other states.

Rebecca:No, I don't think so. I think it will apply only to that District. In any event, I presume the decision will be appealed.
