Last November angry mobs riot and protest in the streets in Khartoum in the Sudan, some carrying weapons, calling for the execution of Gillian Gibbons, a British teacher from Liverpool, England who taught at Unity High School. The school feared for the safety of Miss Gibbons.Miss Gibbons was arrested after several parents complained to Sudan’s Ministry of Education.Her crime that caused the mob to call for her execution? She allowed her 7 year old students to name a Teddy Bear Muhammad.As a result Miss Gibbons was arrested for blasphemy and faced up to six months in prison and also could face up to 40 lashes.The children suggested eight names for the bear including Abdullah, Hassan and Muhammad. Then she explained what it meant to vote and asked them to choose the name.The children chose Muhammad, a popular boy’s name in the Muslim world but also the named of Islam’s revered prophet.School director Robert Boulos said, This was a completely innocent mistake. Miss Gibbons would have never wanted to insult Islam.“We are very concerned about her safety,†he added.Boulos said the school had shut down until January for fear of reprisals.Through the efforts of some Sudanese politician, in response to criticism from the world community, Miss Gibbons was released. Teh and Islamic Human Rights Commission also called for her immediate release. She returned to England unharmed after a sentence of 15 days. She was not lashed.What is alarming here is the knee-jerk reaction by the Islamic public who doesn't even try to discover what happened but immediately goes to mob mentality and calling for the teacher's death.This is not unusual in the Muslim world.The Sudan is also where a priest was executed by crucifixion a few years ago.
