Paganism QUESTION from Marilyn May 25, 2001 Dear John Paul
Is there a new cult/reigion called Paganism? I have a friend who is very concerned about this in regards a family member. She has been told that it leads to Satanism. Is there any basis for this and what are their beliefs other than hedonism? Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, OLSM on July 10, 2001 Dear Mrs. Marilyn:
Paganism is not new. It is as old as the human race. Much of paganism does not explicitly worship Satan or even believe in Satan, but all things not of God are in one way or another in the realm of the evil one.
Paganism can include many different kinds of beliefs ranging from the worship of many gods like the ancient Romans and Greeks, to ancester worship like many American Indian and Chinese, to nature worship, witchcraft, druidism, in ad nausuem.
The bottom line is that paganism is worshipping the creature instead of the Creator. Modern Paganism is usually an excuse to be spiritual without involving the so-called repressive God of Christians.
If a family member is being drawn into paganism, pray for them, and keep praying for them. Hopefully, they will return to the one true God.
