Faith/Spirituality Forum: Currency of Enchiridion of 1968
Currency of Enchiridion of 1968 QUESTION from Catherine Vergne on July 2, 2002 Dear Brother Ignatius,
Do you have a suggestion as to how I may learn an authoritative answer to my question: Is the 1968 Enchiridion of Indulgences still in force throughout the Universal Church, or has it, in whole, or in part, been superceded by some other more recently issued publication?
I asked my pastor; he wasn't sure. I called the NCCB; they told me to inquire at my local archdiocese. I inquired there and was referred to my Archdiocesan Office of Parish Life and Spirituality. The folks there had no clue what it was I was asking about. This is getting scary. Doesn't anyone care about indulgenced prayers anymore?
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, OLSM on July 10, 2002 Dear Mrs. Vergne:
You are right, this is scary....
The 1968 Enchiridion is very much still in force. In fact the 1968 Enchiridion was RE-ISSUED in 1999 with some minor additions, but fully intact from 1968.
You can learn about this from the official Decree from the Vatican: DECREE: Fourth Edition of the 'Enchiridion Indulgentiarum'
and a commentary from Fr. T. M. Sparks, O.P. THE NEW ENCHIRIDION INDULGENTIARUM
