ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, O.L.S.M. on December 17, 2000 Dear Mr. Salinas:
I think you are asking about Locutions.
Locutions are communications from a supernatural source. They can come in three forms:
Words heard by the physical ear
Words heard in the imagination and not by the physical ear
Thoughts communicated directly to the intellect
These are not vague mutterings, but are words clearly understood, compel attention, convey an assurance of their truth, and remain long in the memory.
Thus this is not a fleeting inspired thought that one has, during sleep for example, that is gone from memory when awakening, or any other fleeting inspired thought that one's memory cannot hang onto.
Locutions from God leave an effect of peace and recollection.
But Locutions can be counterfeited by the devil, or can be a result of neurochemical pathology in the brain. Such pseudo-locutions can usually be detected by their nature of effects: incoherence, disquietude of soul, no spiritual influence for good, positive harm (such as a locution that says, kill yourself)
Locutions, like visions, are NOT AT ALL ESSENTIAL to the spiritual life. One should NOT seek them. As one of the greatest mystics, St. Teresa of Avila said once, (in a rough paraphrase) that she would prefer normal experiences to mystical ones any day.
