Divine Office Forum: traditional Divine Office
traditional Divine Office QUESTION from Curtis Powell on November 13, 2002 Do you know where I could obtain the books necessary to pray the Hours of the Divine Office according to the traditional (licit) Roman Calendar? Certainly, it must be available, since the Holy Father himself has established traditional religious orders to provide for the spiritual needs of those who choose to follow the traditional Mass and Sacraments. Thank you and God bless you. Curtis Powell
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, OLSM on November 18, 2002 Dear Mr. Powell:
Well I first need to make a correction. Tradition is teaching that is passed on from generation to generation. Whatever the CURRENT Divine Office is, IS the tradition.
I presume you are wanting the version of the Divine Office that pre-dates Vatican II.
Unless you have a dispensation from the bishop, as in belonging to the FSSP for example which is an approved order according to the Roman Missal of 1960, it would not be proper to pray the Office from that version.
As for the Divine Office books for the version pre-Vatican II can be found at the publication page of the FSSP:

The cost is about $150.
