Papal History QUESTION from Rebeca Klohe June 8, 2000 From what countries did all of the popes come from?
ANSWER by Mrs. Suzanne Fortin, B.A. on June 12, 2000 Dear Miss Klohe
This is your lucky day. I found a website that specifically answers all your questions:
http://www.ozemail.com.au/~altarboy/Popes.html.
I categorized the popes according to their region of birth:
211 Italians 17 French 12 Greeks 6 Syrians 4 Germans 3 Africans 2 Dalmatian (that is, Croatian) 2 unknown 1 Jew 1 Pole 1 English 1 Dutch 1 Portuguese 1 Spaniard
A note about African popes: Some people believe that they were black; in fact, we can't be 100% certain of their racial origins, but the existence of Roman colonies in Africa suggests that they were probably Caucasian.
Another good page is from New Advent.org:
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12272b.htm.
Not only does it list every pope, but it has a link to each pope's biography.
Thanks for your question.
God Bless, Suzanne Fortin
