Genuflecting to receive Communion QUESTION from Ian May 26, 1999
I had something to add to your comments concerning the bishop in Pennsylvania ordering his diocese to make the sign of the cross instead of genuflecting. According to the GIRM#21: But it is up to the conference of bishops to adapt the actions and postures described in the Order of the Roman Mass to the customs of the people. [29] But the conference must make sure that such adaptations correspond to the meaning and character of each part of the celebration. It would appear that the bishop was overstepping his authority by mandating posture that wasn't decided by the conference. ANSWER by Mr. John Miskell on May 26, 1999
Dear Ian, Thanks for your input. I recall reading something which indicated that the local ordinary has some discretion in this area, however _where_ I read it escapes me at the moment. I'll poke around for it -- perhaps it was only an opinion as opposed to something with authority. I'll get back to you on it if I find something. Thanks again. Yours in Christ, John Miskell Back to Index Page
