Liturgy & Liturgical Law Forum: would this be allowed
would this be allowed QUESTION from lachon on November 5, 2002 I went to mass at a local catholic church, to my suprise when the preist was consecrating the bread and wine they had about 50 teenagers on the alter. I just wanted to know if that was ok. Can you please answer the question for me.
I appreciate your help!
ANSWER by Mr. Jacob Slavek on November 22, 2002 Dear Lachon,
This is not allowed. In Notitiae, Rome responded to this abuse years ago. Here is the text:
During the liturgy of the eucharist, only the presiding celebrant remains at the altar. The assembly of the faithful take their place in the Church outside the presbyterium, which is reserved for the celebrant or concelebrants and altar ministers. Not 17 (1981)61.
If this isn't explicit, then I don't know what is. There is NO way to interpret this to allow what you have seen.
Thanks for writing,
Mr. Slavek
