Irreverance by clergy QUESTION from Mary March 17, 2000
Is it considered a scandal to the Church when the priest and deacon at my parish never genuflect or give any other type of reverence to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament? They often lead you to wonder if they even believe in the Divinity of Jesus by the things they say. This attitude has filtered down from our bishop, but what can WE do about it? They have already publicly ridiculed my family because of our continued orthodoxy on several occasions. There are no other parishes nearby that this clergy doesn't also have control of, and we must fulfill our Sunday obligation. ANSWER by Mr. John Miskell on April 6, 2000
Dear Mary, Their actions are indeed scandalous. If their attitude reflects the attitude of your bishop, all you can effectively do is to pray and offer up your suffering for them. You can also take much comfort in the fact that Jesus actually predicted that this very thing would happen to you. Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. [Matthew 5:11] Hang in there and know that you are not alone.
