Lamb of God QUESTION from JK February 17, 2000
Our Parish uses an unusual song at the place in the Mass when we should be praying the Lamb of God. It has many verses that the choir sings and the people respond with the words,Hear our prayer, hear our prayer in this bread and wine we share may we be your sign of peace everywhere. It is found in Breaking Bread and was written by Bernadette Farrell. The title of the song is Jesus, Lamb of God. My question is, is it appropriate to use a song that is so far from the words of the prayer as a substitute for the actual Lamb of God? Thank you for your response. Dear JK, The substitution is inappropriate. Regulation of the sacred liturgy depends solely on the authority of the Church, that is, on the Apostolic See and, as laws may determine, on the bishop. Therefore no other person, even if he be a priest, may add, remove, or change anything in the liturgy on his own authority. [Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, #22] John Miskell Back to Index Page
