What do we call the Old Testament? QUESTION from Deacon Larry Lottier January 3, 2000
I recently read, at least I think I did, that the NCCB came out with a statement that we were to refer to the Old Testament and New Testament rather than calling them the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures. I now can't find where I read it. Can you help? Thanks and God bless, Deacon Larry Lottier ANSWER by Mr. John Miskell on Monday, January 3, 2000
Dear Deacon Lottier, Happy Jubilee and thank you for your question. I haven't read anything about it. While browsing through the NCCB website I found numerous references to both Hebrew Scriptures and Old Testament by various authors. I personally think Old Testament and New Testament are the most appropriate titles, as we Catholics are the people of both books. The Old Testament is as much a Catholic book as the New Testament is. Christ, salvation history, the Church and the whole Catholic religion was foretold in the Old Testament. Perhaps one of the other experts could shed more light on the topic. God bless you and yours.
