The Church is not a community of the perfect, but a community of sinners, obliged to recognize their need for God’s love, their need to be purified through the Cross of Jesus Christ, said Benedict XVI Friday, celebrating Mass in St Peter’s Basilica on the Solemnity of Saints Peter Paul. After conferring the pallium on over 40 new metropolitan archbishops, the Pope recalled the history and powers of these two spiritual pillars of the Church. We must insistently call upon God to renew our lives. This was the message of Pope Benedict, speaking to the faithful before the Angelus prayer, as he commented on Sunday’s Gospel. He spoke about the two miraculous healings performed by Jesus Christ, who is attentive to the suffering of men and women. The Pope reminds us that, in addition to asking God for healing from physical evils, we must also ask for a strong faith, a faith in God’s Providence, which will never abandon us.
