Lucifer QUESTION from Martha on February 9, 2003 What does the Bible say about Lucifer/Satan? I have heard conflicting stories about the Fall.
ANSWER by Mr. Joe Meineke on February 11, 2003 Dear Martha, Thank you for your question. Scripture doesn't tell us specifically what caused the fall of the Lucifer (and a large number of other angels). It does, however, tell us that it certainly did happen (see: Rev 12:7-9, Is 14:12-15, Lk 10:18) and this is what is important. As for why it happened, there are several popular theological explanations. This is an area that the Church has not decided upon officially (and perhaps will not). We are therefore free to accept one of a number of possibilities. Peter Kreeft, in his book, Angels and Demons: What Do We Really Know About Them? gives one of the more widely accepted explanations:
The Christian version works even better: God revealed to the angels His plan not only to create man but to incarnate himself in man, in Jesus. Satan and the other dignified angels refused to accept this undignified plan and bow to a God of flesh and blood. (p.119). There are other versions, and they all have as their common denominator the sins of pride and rebellion. If you would like more information on this subject, you may want to consider purchasing Kreeft's book (see link above). One other good resource that deals with this subject is Joan Carol Cruz's, Angels & Devils. I hope that this helps. God bless you, Joe Meineke Assistant to Bro.
