Spiritual Warfare Forum: Roman Rite
Roman Rite QUESTION from Sophia on January 18, 2003 Please, what is the precise title, and where can I find to purchase, the older Roman Rite of exorcism of The Roman Catholic Church?
I understand that the older Roman Rite, for the use of exorcist-priests, was extremely effacious, but that it has been discontinued and revised in the last years or decade.
Please, could you help me to purchase copies of the older Roman Rite particularly, and also of the newer Rite.
Any information or experience which you could share regarding the orthodox Roman Catholic theology and practice of exorcism and deliverance from demonic influence, would be gratefully received.
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, OLSM on January 26, 2003 Dear Mrs. Sophia:
I am somewhat reluctant to give this information in such a public place or to give it at all except to those who are properly disposed to understand it and will not abuse it.
The Rite of Exorcism cannot under ANY circumstances be used in whole or part by the laity or even by priests unless the priest has been deputed to do so by the authority of his bishop.
Thus, having a copy of the Rite can serve no useful purpose except curiosity.
Nevertheless, the former Rite of Exorcism is readily available in the 1964 Roman Ritual.
The revised Rite of Exorcism has not yet been officially translated into English that I know of, but is available in Latin. The name of the New Rite is: De Exorcismis et Supplicationibus Quibusdam (Of Exorcisms and Certain Supplications). A brief check at Ixtmedia, the official Internet distributor of the Vatican Press, shows that the volume is currently out-of-print with another printing on the way. It is only in Latin.
There are many ideas floating around out there is Catholic land about exorcism and deliverance -- most of them either outright wrong, exaggerated, or misguided.
That is the reason we have opened the St. Padre Pio Center for Deliverance Counseling. Our goal is to give accurate information that is consistent with the official teaching of the Church and accurate information from clinical experiences.
The Center also provides Deliverance Counseling services and has a 4-year training program to train clergy and laity in spiritual warfare and deliverance work.
