Spiritual Warfare Forum: victim soul and demons?

victim soul and demons? QUESTION from Erin September 30, 2001
I had heard from someone once that it in order to offer yourself as a victim soul that you had to do so under the direction of a priest, to avoid Satan making mincemeat out of you. I didn't understand this..how can one offer oneself to God, and instead be attacked by Satan? Is it true? Do you have to be in a state of grace when you do it?
Thanks, Erin
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, OLSM on October 9, 2001 Dear Mrs Erin:
It is wise to seek advice of a spiritual director anytime we are thinking about severe mortifications and devotions. These severe forms of devotion can be dangerous if one is not really called by God to do them. A Spiritual Director can help the person to discern what God is really wanting. NEVER trust yourself. We can fool ourselves too easily.
God allows Satan to bother us when we are making great leaps of faith for a variety of reasons. One is to test our resolve, two is to mold us in humility, and three is to show the glory of God. I am sure there are many other reasons as well.
One should always try to be in a state of grace. And no decision concerning God's call should be made unless one is in a state of grace. Sin on the soul can cloud our judgment and allow Satan greater access to us to trick us.
