Faith/Spirituality Forum: Seven Deadly Sins

Seven Deadly Sins QUESTION from Shala on December 16, 2002 Hi there,
I wish to find out which are the Seven Deadly Sins, and where it appear in the Bible. I only could remember some of them, they are 1)Envy, 2) Anger, 3)Greed, 4)Lust, and i forgot the other 3.
And what's the correlations between the seven deadly sins and the 10 commandments?
thanks, Shala
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, OLSM on December 24, 2002 Dear Shala:
The Seven Capital (Deadly) Sins are:

1 - Pride 2 - Covetousness 3 - Lust 4 - Anger 5 - Gluttony 6 - Envy 7 - Sloth
They are Deady because these sins engender other sins and vices.
The compilation of the deadly sins is not a Biblical list, but rather a theological list derived from Scripture. St. John Cassian and St. Gregory the Great are credited with recognizing this list.
These deadly sins are the opposite of the Seven Christian Virtues which are:

1 - Humilty 2 - Liberality 3 - Chastity 4 - Gentleness 5 - Temperance 6 - Brotherly Love 7 - Diligence
As for a correlation with the 10 Commandments, the 7 deadly sins do contain several of the SHALL SHALL NOTs of the 10 Commandments.
The Ten Commandments are:

1 - I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange gods before me. 2 - You shall not take the name of hte Lord you God in vain.
3 - Remember the keep holy the Lord's Day.
4 - Honor your father and your mother.
5 - You shall not kill.
6 - You shall not commit adultery.
7 - You shall not steal.
8 - You shall not bear false witness against your neigbor.
9 - You shall not covet your neigbor's wife.
10 - You shall not covet your neighbor's goods.

I would suggest that the correlation between the Deadly Sins and the 10 Commandments are as follows:

Pride is the capital sin involved in Commandment 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 Covetousness is the captial sin behind Commandment 10, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8
Lust is the captial sin behind Commandment 6 and 9
Anger is the captial sin behind Commandment 5 and 8
Gluttony is not directly correlated but may contribute to Commandments 3, 5, 6, 7, 10
Envy is the captial sin behind Commandment 5, 7, 8, 10
Sloth is not directly correlated but may contribute to Commandments 3, 4, 7, 10

This is just a suggestion. Others may find other correlations.
