Faith/Spirituality Forum: Symbols around the Cross
Symbols around the Cross QUESTION from Mark L. Beyke on May 19, 2002 Brother John Paul,
You recently received a question concerning four symbols around the cross in someone's Church, each holding the bible. These are the symbols of the four evangilists, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The symbols are of a man, a bull, an eagle, and a lion. I am not certain which symbol is associated with which Gospel writer though.
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, OLSM on May 23, 2002 Dear Mr. Beyke:
Thanks for the information.
All I have to say is dah. Wap my pointed head with a spoon. I should have known that. :)
The Symbols are:
for Matthew = Man/Angel for Mark = Lion for Luke = Ox/bull for John = Eagle
In fact there is an entire website devoted to information about these symbols:
Symbols of the Four Evangelists
My apologies to Adrian Buie who posted the original question on April 7, 2002. I should have known better.
