scripture QUESTION from Bkindt April 4, 2000 It says in Exodus that Moses was slow of speech..did he have a speech impediment or a stutter..is he the patron saint of those of us who have a speech impediment?? Just wondering.
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, O.L.S.M. on April 5, 2000 Dear Dr. Bkindt:
Yes, Moses is thought to have had some sort of speech problem, maybe stuttering, that made him feel self-conscious about being a spokesman for God. He tried to pass the job to Aaron, his brother, who was eloquent of speech, as a result.
I am not aware of any formal proclamation of Moses being the Patron of speech disorders. A quick check in a book I have didn't give anyone as a patron of speech disorders which is kind of odd. I am sure there is a one formally.
Nevertheless, Moses could certainly be considered a patron of speech disorders at least informally and for our personal devotions as he did have this problem and would understand our experience with this.
God Bless.
