Divine Office Forum: Responsories for Office of Readings
Responsories for Office of Readings QUESTION from Jonathon Blackwin on March 30, 2002 Bro. Ignatius,
I have been praying the Liturgy of the Hours for 6-months now, and I thank you for your forum, as it has helped me immensly.
I have been saying morning and evening prayer. However, while I was waiting for the Good Friday service to begin, I decided to pray the Office of Readings.
I have the one-volume Christian Prayer version, and was following the instructions for the Office on page 35. It said that responsories are said after both the first and second readings. However, I could not find these in my volume. Are they not included in my volume, or have I simply not found them as yet?
I went to a Catholic bookstore today and found that the Daughters of St. Paul version has the responsories. Do I need to buy a different version to say the Office of Readings properly?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Jonathon
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, OLSM on April 20, 2002 Dear Mr. Blackwin:
In order to actually pray the Readings in their fullness you will have to buy the 4 vol set which costs around $130.
You are right, I don't see the responsorial in the Catholic Book Publishing one-volume edition; but it is in the Daughters of St. Paul one-volume edition.
You will need to Christian Reading in 6 volumes, or the Complete Liturgy of the Hours in the 4 volume set in order to pray the Office of Readings (also called Vigils).
The one-vol books only have a sampling.
God Bless you for praying the official prayer of the Church.
