Church History Forum: Jesus the Christ
Jesus the Christ QUESTION from Mile on August 24, 2002 I would appreciate it if you could explain to me how Jesus came to be understood as Christ, Lord and Saviour in the post-Easter period and in the early centuries of the Church. How important is it for Christians today?
Thank you.
ANSWER by Bro. John-Paul Ignatius, OLSM on August 30, 2002 Dear Mile:
Jesus was understood to be Christ from the Pentecost in 33AD to the present. If their were any doubts among the apostles before Pentecost, those doubts were totally resolved at Pentecost.
Without the understanding of Jesus as Christ there would have been no Christianity. Jesus as Christ is the whole point. If the early Christians had not understood this, they would not have been Christians and the religion would never have started.
How is this important for us today? Well without Jesus as Christ we would have no salvation and would be doomed to hell (eternal separation from God). I'd say that is pretty important.
