Sacred Music QUESTION from Ian 07 Jun 1999
Just a couple of thoughts on the music. The singers mentioned (Amy Grant, etc.) are not writing music for use in the liturgy. Amy Grant isn't even Catholic and I'm not sure Michael W. Smith is either. The music used at Mass should be appropriate for Mass, not for youth rallies. Often these get confused to the detriment of the sacred nature of the Mass. Unfortunately, the Church hasn't made any official comments on music since 1974 when it issued a letter to all the bishops of the world along with a booklet which contained the minimum amount of chant that should be known by the faithful. The silence from the Church concerning music has led many to assume that anything goes. ANSWER by Mr. John Miskell on June 10, 1999
