Monsignor Peter Elliott QUESTION from Michael Pearce May 23, 1999
Just for your information: In 1997, Monsignor Peter Elliott resigned from the Curia and returned to his home town of Melbourne, Australia, where he is now implementing a new Religious Education syllabus for the diocesan schools. Yesterday, 23 May 1998, there was a demonstration during a Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral celebrated by Archbishop Pell. The demonstration was against the Archbishop's actions on a number of matters, including the new RE syllabus. Regards, Michael Pearce PS: Also in 1997 a rather fine new altar was blessed at St Patrick's Melbourne by John Cardinal O'Connor, visiting from New York. ANSWER by Mr. John Miskell on May 23, 1999
Dear Michael, Thank you for your report from Down Under. The Church is blessed by having men like Monsignor Elliot and Archbishop Pell. They must be making their orthodoxy strongly felt otherwise there'd be no demonstrations. Cardinal O'Connor gets his share of demonstrations too - comes with the miter I suppose. I'm blessed to have had some connections to the Cardinal. When he was in the U.S. Navy in Washington, D.C., my Aunt Dorothy (Sammon) Swarta, my mom's sister, was his secretary. Before going to New York he first served as Bishop of Scranton, PA. which is my hometown. He's a great man. Thanks again. Yours in Christ, John Miskell Back to Index Page
