Liturgy & Liturgical Law Forum: Can Lutherans receive Holy Communion

by Catherine Frakas 28 May 2002

Can Lutherans receive Holy Communion QUESTION from Kathryn on September 12, 2002 Are there any circumstances under which a Roman Catholic priest may knowingly give Holy Communion to a Lutheran? Can you refer me to whatever rule that governs such a matter? Thank you.
ANSWER by Mr. Jacob Slavek on September 18, 2002 Dear Kathryn,
The circumstances are rare. They are found in Canon Law, number 844. The danger of death must be present, a minister of their own faith must not be available, they must ask for it on their own accord, must show the proper respect for the sacrament, have a Catholic understanding of the Eucharist, and be properly disposed.
Mr. Slavek
