Liturgy & Liturgical Law Forum: Water and Wine

by Catherine Frakas 08 Jun 2002

Water and Wine QUESTION from Kevin on July 30, 2002 Why does the Priest pour a small amount of water into the wine before the consecration?
ANSWER by Mr. Jacob Slavek on August 7, 2002 Dear Kevin,
I did not fond an official explanation for this, but here is the prayer that the priest says inaudibly as he pours:

By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity.
So I say that it has to do with the dual natures of Christ.
Also I have heard that it is done in memory of the blood and water that poured from the side of Jesus when he was pierced by the soldier.
Mr. Slavek
