Liturgy & Liturgical Law Forum: Altar servers
Altar servers QUESTION from Eileen on May 28, 2002 Hello,
My question concerns the latest practice that our parish priest has started with the altar servers.
We are new at this parish. my sons where altar servers at our old parish. When the boys became servers here, they were told not to hold there hands in the prayer position. They do not bow at the priest when assisting him. although, my boys still bow when crossing the altar. Many servers here do not know to show this respect.
Now, our pastor has removed the altar servers from the sanctuary during the Consecration of the Eucharist. They must kneel and ring the bells from the outside of the sanctuary which is defined by a wood railing.
I would like to know if this is acceptable. It really bothers me that he is doing this.
Thank you,
Eileen
ANSWER by Mr. Jacob Slavek on June 5, 2002 Dear Eileen,
I don't think that I could say that this is particularly problematic, but yet I ask why is he doing this. The altar servers do indeed have a place inside the sanctuary. I think that maybe there is a more practical reason that we are missing. What is the shape/size of the sanctuary, etc.
Mr. Slavek
