Liturgy & Liturgical Law Forum: non-Catholic choir

by Catherine Frakas 09 May 2001

non-Catholic choir QUESTION from Mary Andersen April 5, 2001 Our parish recently hosted a non-Catholic choir at one of our regular Sunday Masses. The music was distinctly Protestant. I thought only Catholics in good standing could serve in this or any ministerial capacity at Mass. Is this correct?
Thank you.
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, OLSM on April 23, 2001 Dear Miss Andersen:
You are correct, in my opinion. A non-Catholic choir singing during Mass and especially singing songs not approved and not consistent with Catholic teaching is a scandal. This practice should be protested and if the priest does not repent, go to the bishop.
Bro. Ignatius
