Liturgy Forum: Splitting Liturgies (Word and Eucharist)
Splitting Liturgies (Word and Eucharist) QUESTION from Bro. Zechariah Hyacinth February 26, 2001 Is it permitted to have the liturgy of the word and the liturgy of the eucharist in different rooms? That is, to have the litury of the word in a very informal setting (couches, etc) and then after the homily to announce that the congregation should move to the chapel for the remainder of the mass.
Thank you, Bro. Zechariah Hyacinth
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, O.L.S.M. on March 12, 2001 Dear Brother:
I thought I have heard it all, but this is a new and stupid one. Canon Law clearly states that Mass should be said in a Church, Oratory, or Chapel, except when that is not possible, or when special circumstances warrant.
There is no provision to say part of the Mass in one place and then move to another place. And frankly the philosophical basis for doing this split I believe comes from the 60's flower-child mentality and is stupid on its face.
Whatever priest is doing this should be deprogrammed and re-educated.
