Spiritual Warfare Catalog Entry Return to Catalog Index Prayer To Confess Abortion [NOTE: It is unlikely that any aspect of having an abortion can be considered a venial sin except under the most unusual circumstances, determined by the Church, involving emotional instability or other similar reasons. The Church teaches that this is a mortal sin and thus this sin must be confessed to a priest in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Abortion is considered so serious by the Church that the sin suffers an automatic excommunication according to Canon Law 1398. Those who have actually facilitated abortions on others also need to confess their mortal sin in the Sacrament. Reconciliation is always possible for the repentant sinner. The following prayers are useful in preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.] If Unmarried: Lord, I confess that I used my body as an instrument of unrighteousness and conceived a child. I did not assume stewardship of that life, and I ask your forgiveness. I give that child to You for Your care in eternity. Amen. If married, joint decision: Lord, We confess that we have taken things in my our hands and destroyed the child You gave to us. We did not assume stewardship of that life, and we ask Your forgiveness. We give that child to You for Your care in eternity. Amen. If married, unilateral decision: Lord, I confess that I have taken things in my own hands and destroyed the child You gave to me and my husband. I did not assume stewardship of that life and I did not respect my husband in letting him know about what I planned to do so that he might be able to council me to do Your Will, and I ask Your forgiveness.
