You are a very hateful person. Chew on this: 1. Pope Sergius III (904 – 911) obtained his office by murder. He fathered several illegitimate children by Marozia, who assassinated Pope Leo VI (928 – 929), and put her own teenage son (John XI) as Pope. 2. Pope John XII (955 – 964) is described in the Catholic encyclopedia as a coarse, immoral man. The Catholic collection of the lives of the Popes, the Liber Pontificalis said: He spent his entire life in adultery. Catholic bishop Luitprand states that he had no respect for single girls, married woman or widows – they were sure to be defiled by him. 3. Pope Boniface VII (984 – 985), John XII and Leo VIII were described by the Bishop of Orleans as monsters of guilt, reeking in blood and filth. 4. Pope John XV (985 – 996) split the churches finances among his relatives and was described as covetous of filthy lucre and corrupt in all his acts. 5. Pope Benedict IX (1033 – 1045) committed murders and adulteries in broad daylight, robbed pilgrims, and was regarded as a hideous criminal. The people drove him out of Rome: The Catholic encyclopedia says, He was a disgrace to the chair of Peter. 6. Pope Innocent III (1198 – 1216) promoted the Inquisition, surpassing all his predecessors in killing over one million people. 7. Pope Boniface VIII (1294 – 1303). The Catholic encyclopedia states Scarcely any possible crime was omitted – heresy, gross and unnatural immorality, idolatry, magic, simony … his whole pontificate was one record of evil. Dante visited Rome and described the Vatican as a sewer of corruption and assigned Boniface VII, Nicholas III and Clement V to the lowest parts of hell. Pope Boniface proposed to be an atheist and in 1302 issued the Unum Sanctum officially declaring the Roman Catholic church as the only true church, outside of which on one can be saved. 8. Pope John XXIII (1410 – 1415) was accused by 37 clergy witnesses of fornication, adultery, incest, sodomy, simony, theft and murder. It was proved by a legion of witnesses that he had seduced and violated 300 nuns. He kept a harem at Boulogne of 200 girls. He was publicly called the devil incarnate. He has been called the most depraved criminal who ever sat on the papal throne. 9. Pope Pius II (1458 – 1464) fathered many illegitimate children and taught others to do likewise. 10. Pope Paul II (1464 – 1471) maintained a house full of concubines. 11. Pope Sixtus IV (1471 – 1484) financed his wars by selling church offices to the highest bidders. 12. Pope Innocent VII (1484 – 1492) fathered 16 illegitimate children by various women. 13. Pope Alexander VI (1492 – 1503) committed incest with his two sisters and daughter. On October 31, 1501 he conducted the worst ever sex orgy in the Vatican. 14. Pope Paul III (1534 – 1549) as a cardinal fathered three sons and a daughter and sought advice from astrologers. 15. Pope Leo X (1513 – 1521) the Catholic encyclopedia says was possessed by an insatiable love of pleasure, revelry and carousing. Luther visited Rome and said: No one can imagine what sins and infamous actions are committed in Rome. A saying was: If there is a hell, Rome is built over it. 16. Pope Joan was a female pope whose name was changed later to Pope Zacharias. Luther, on visiting Rome reported her statue in a back street, and John Huss referred to her in his defence as the Council of Constance and this went unchallenged. She died in childbirth while in a public procession. 17. Pope Stephen VI (896 – 897) brought the dead body of former Pope Formosus (891 – 897) to trial, hacked off his decaying finger and had him dragged through the streets of Rome and thrown into the Tiber river. 18. Pope Eugene IV (1431 – 1447) condemned Joan of Arc to be burned alive as a witch, but Pope Benedict IV (1919) declared her a saint. 19. The great schism of 1378 lasted 50 years, where Italian and French popes cursed each other. 20. Pope Alexander III decreed in 1170 that wills had to be made in front of a priest, or excommunication (cutting off from church and sentence to hell) would result. The church was utterly corrupt. A political power having nothing to do with Christianity, except in name. A political power utterly different to the New Testament concept of the church, and that practised by Christians in the first three centuries. This evil corrupt political body was responsible for many atrocities. At this point critics of Christianity say ‘well there you go – look at the persecutions and atrocities perpetrated by the church; so Christianity is evil etc’ Let’s look at this rationally and without preconceived prejudice. Does that logic hold? What the critic has shown is that the church in the middle ages was/is evil and corrupt. Well I fully agree with the critic. But the point is that the church was so obviously a political power having very little to do with Christianity. Let me continue. Whilst the church became more corrupt, there were sincere Christians within it who objected to this corruption. They saw the vast departure from Christianity in both doctrine and practise; and they tried to return to the Christianity found in the New Testament. What happened to these people? These people were a threat to this corrupt, evil, political body. So they were ruthlessly, and often cruelly killed. For instance: (Fox’s book of Martyrs) In 1506, one William Tilfrey, a pious man, was burnt alive at Amersham, in a close called Stoneyprat, and at the same time, his daughter, Joan Clarke, a married women, was obliged to light the fagots that were to burn her father. Tilfrey’s crime was simply believing the Bible, and not the corrupt teachings from the ‘church’. For that he was burnt alive; and what was especially cruel was that his daughter was forced to light the faggots. This was no extreme or isolated case. Christians were burnt at the stake in the cruelest possible manner for the heinous crime of being Christian – in following the teaching of the Bible, rather than the so obviously corrupt ‘church’. Roman Catholic documents revealed that they murdered around 68 million Christians from 1100 to 1800 AD when the Inquisition stopped. The following torture devices were used against protesting Christians: 1. The rack which stretched and dislocated joints. 2. Heavy pincers tore out fingernails. 3. Thumbscrews dislocated fingers. 4. Spanish boots crushed legs and feet. 5. The Iron virgin was a hollow metal case with knives inside, which pierced the victim placed in it. 6. Hanging. 7. Eyes gouged out. 8. Molten lead poured into ears and mouth. 9. Being forced to jump off cliffs onto sharp spikes below. 10. 100,000 Albigenses (Protestants) were massacred in one day in 1211, then burned in heaps. 11. Pope Pius IV sent the Italian army to massacre many women and children at Orange in 1562. 12. 10,000 Hugenots (French Protestants) were killed in Paris on St Bartholomews Day and 75,000 the week after. The Hugenot wars killed 200,000 Protestants. 13. The 30 Years War in Germany saw the population drop from 15 million to 5 million due to Catholic invading armies killing 900,000 protestants. The Roman church killed millions of Christians. They were killed because they rejected the immorality and false doctrines of this corrupt political body. Who were the ‘evil ones’ responsible for the Jewish holocaust? Nazi’s or Jews? Well Nazi’s because it was the Jews who were killed by the million. Christians were killed by the million by this corrupt political body. So why does Christianity get the blame? That would be equivalent to blaming the Jewish holocaust on the Jews! The critic of Christianity who says: ‘well there you go – look at the persecutions and atrocities perpetrated by the church; so Christianity is evil etc’ has utterly failed to grasp that the so called church referred to, had quite obviously become so corrupted that it had little to do with Christianity, save in name only. This is further evidenced in that those who did want a return to Christianity were ruthlessly killed. Let me give an illustration: A terrorist dresses up as an orthodox Jew, and blows himself up and a bus full of orthodox Jews. The critics arguement is analogous to saying that the perpetrator of this crime is an orthodox Jew! The critic has not shown Christianity is evil etc; what he has shown is that a corrupted Christianity that is so far gone that it persecutes Christians, is evil. The difference is immense. Christ’s teachings are clear: But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you; that you may be the children of your Father which is in heaven; for he makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love them which love you, what reward have you? Do not even the publicans do the same? Matthew 5:44-46 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. Matthew 5:38,39 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Matthew 22:36-39 And from the epistles: If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, Love your neighbor as yourself, you are doing right. (NIV) – James 2:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 1 John 4:8 If someone wants to ignore the teaching of Christianity and commit atrocities whilst wearing a priests robe, one can hardly blame Christianity. Since Christianity is diametrically opposite to that man’s actions. A certain labour activist was arrested some time ago for being a paedophile. He was an activist in Tony Blair’s constituency. Now I’m no fan of Tony Blair, but it would be patently ridiculous of someone to blame Tony Blair for the actions of this labour activist. Tony Blair had never told the man to commit paedophile acts; if anything the opposite. Yet this i precisely the type of mistake the critic makes when calling Christianity evil. One final point. Critics often make much of people like Galileo being persecuted by this church. This seems to prove to critics the evil of Christianity. The point is that millions of Christians had also been persecuted by this so called church. Why ignore them, and concentrate on Galileo? Because the critic is picking and choosing what facts to allow – instead of allowing all facts. Interestingly Galileo was a man of science, yes; but he was also a firm believer in the Bible and a man of faith. Excerpts from the letter to Madame Christina help to reveal Galileo’s view of Scripture and that of his predecessors. He writes: I think in the first place that it is very pious to say and prudent to affirm that the Holy Bible can never speak untruth — whenever its true meaning is understood. Critics have unfairly made Galileo an example of Christianity persecuting the scientist (inferred: the humanist or atheist scientist). This is incompatible with the facts. As shown, the so called church was anything but Christian, and was killing Christians; and Galileo himself was a man of faith and firm believer in the Bible. The conclusion? The critic is right when he says the middle age church was guilty of atrocities and evil. I agree. I would agree with the critic that religion can be downright evil. I would agree with the critic that corrupted Christianity can be downright evil. Christianity however is not evil. Christians themselves were victims of this evil entity. Were men and women and even children, who burned slowly at the stake, evil? Yet these were the Christians who dared to disagree with a corrupt evil political ‘church’. How sad, and intellectually dishonest it is, to call Christianity evil, or Bible believing Christians/Christianity evil when these very people who were burned at the stake were precisely that: – namely Christians who believed the Bible, rather than believing a corrupt political power. Please be honest and free from prejudice, and put the blame where it belongs. It was not Christianity that was guilty, but a perverse and corrupt political system, that was itself killing Christians.
