Ashfaq Fateh
Ashfaq Fateh is inducted into the Hall of Honor for his courage as a Christian Pakistani to promote peace and understanding in Pakistan. Mr. Ashfaq Fateh was born on October 10th, 1973 in Tandla, Pakistan. He received his education from St. Peter’s High School Toba Tek Singh and the Government Degree College. He holds a B.Ed Degree (1998) and a Masters in Social Studies with distinction (2001). Ashfaq was married to Miss Rafia Salomi on December 11th, 1997. In 1993, he started his career as a teacher at St. Peter’s High School. On August 20, 2002 Fr. Bonnie Mendes gave him the responsibility as the Head Teacher. Ashfaq was very popular and a favorite personality among the students both as a teacher and as a Principal. He always viewed young students as ambassadors of peace. On August 8th , 2010 he resigned from this position and laid the foundation of an organization entitled, Ravi Foundation. Ravi Foundation Pakistan has a strong focus to improve the quality of Human and animal’s rights in Pakistan, with the objective of achieving international standards. Ravi Foundation works to uplift the vulnerable, deprived and neglected segments of the societies of the Pakistan. Particularly, Ravi Foundation works for interfaith dialogue and harmony among peoples. In 2013 and 2014 the Ravi Foundation Pakistan provided wheat straw, wheat bran and arranged medical camps for the millions of animals in five districts of Pakistan such as Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Sialkot, Narowal and DG Khan.
Cross border peace: Ashfaq Fateh receives his Acha Star award from I. A. Rehman & Dr. Pritam K. Rohilla in Lahore. From 2012 to 2013 he served as coordinator of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan Peoples’ Forum. As an active member of AMAN ki ASHA from 2007 to 2013, he struggled for peace and harmony. To make a peaceful and positive connection among children belonging to the various countries, he started a program named Peace Pals. This program brought a very positive change among children to promote peace among youth and communities. Several programs were organized. Seeing his struggle for peace and Interfaith Harmony, in 2010 he was awarded with a ACHA (Association for Communal Harmony in Asia) Peace Star Award. From 1992 until his death in 2013, Ashfaq Fateh was engaged in efforts to bring together Muslims and Christians in Pakistan. As chairman for the Harmony Foundation and principal of a high school he inspired and organised programmes in schools to promote peace, gender equality, and religious harmony. In June 2010, he led a group of students to the Wagah border as part of the Aman Ki Asha Peace handkerchiefs initiative. Ashfaq gives speech on the Peace Pal program: In 2013, remaining seriously ill for 4 months, he went to the eternal rest (May his soul rest in Peace). All of his struggles and efforts for the uplifting of the marginalized, for youth and children will always be remembered. AsiaNews said of him:
Ashfaq Fatah was model of Christian activism, like the late great Anthony Mathew and Clement Shahbaz Bhatti, people who also died too early, but who have left their mark on the map of Pakistan and pointed to a way forward. So says Atif Jamil Pagaan, social worker and director of Harmony Foundation, remembering the Pakistani Catholic activist Ashfaq Fateh, who died recently after a brief illness at the age of 41. The funeral took place on April 20 in city district of Toba Tek Singh, Punjab province, in front of a great multitude made up of Christians and Muslims, without distinction of creed or social class, from all classes and backgrounds. His death has caused deep sorrow and participation throughout the community, which has come together in prayer to bid a final farewell to a person who was at the forefront in the struggle for the development of the Christian minority and its presence within the civil society. Many tributes were paid to his wife Salome, whom he married in 1997 and with whom he had made several trips (one of them to India), one of his many passions. In recent weeks, the doctors tried in every way to remove a liver tumor, but the disease was already in an advanced stage. However, his witness of life and faith remains. Ashfaq Fateh was passionate about media and communication, a lover of travel with a deep desire to learn languages ??- especially English – and improve his own cultural level (and not only). He was also very close to Fr. Bonnie Mendes, former Regional Coordinator for Caritas and active in social work, who guided him over the years in his spiritual formation and education. In fact, it is thanks to the priest that he drew close to the world of the media – especially television and news – and the study of English. As a young man, Ashfaq represented Pakistan in a meeting between Catholics from around the world which was held in Caracas, Venezuela, thanks to visa obtained through the Iranian Embassy. A document that allowed him to visit Tehran, where he met with Dominican priests in the Islamic Republic. His memory is linked to environmental activism, the desire to strengthen inter-religious dialogue and his witness of Christian and Catholic life, which he never gave up. In his career he also directed and guided the Ravi Foundation, a nongovernmental organization that deals with the most needy and served as teacher and principal of St. Peter High School. He is missed by everyone who knew him.
