Work Schedule
Work Schedule QUESTION from Devin on June 14, 2004
I have a summer job out of college that requires me to work at 8PM till 6 A.M. in the morning. I still want to pray the Liturgy of the Hours so my idea was to pray the office of Readings and lauds together when I get home after 6 and to pray vespers and compline around 7:30. Would it be possible to combine vespers and compline and how would it be done.
Also is there another arrangement of praying the hours that might work better.
Often, I use the internet to pray the hours at www.liturgyofthehours.org. It gives full texts for Vigils, Lauds, compline and vespers and gives one the daytime prayers. Is this a good sight to be using also.
Thanks and God Bless,Devin

Dear Devin:
Vigils and Lauds are often said together so that is not a problem; the General Instructions provide for that. Combining Vespers and Compline are not provided for in the Instructions, but you can, in effect, combine them.
Unlike Vigils and Lauds where transition from Vigils to Lauds is facilitated in a way to make it one prayer session, if you wish to say Compline right after Vespers, you can, but you need to finish Vespers like you ordinarily would. Then begin Compline in the ordinary way a minute or two after Vespers is completed.
The website you list actually takes you to Liturgy of the Hours Apostolate. This website has the approved texts and is thus good to use.
The Universalis site, however, does NOT have the approved text and thus cannot be use to pray the Liturgy of the Hours.
