ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, OLSM on January 29, 2003 Dear Mike:
I applaud your wanting to have a Spiritual Director. We all need one. The problem is finding a good Spiritual Director who is also loyal and obedient to the Church and knowledgeable in the areas needed in spiritual direction.
Before seeking out a Spiritual Director I would HIGHLY advise you to read the book, Seeking Spiritual Direction: How to Grow the Divine Life Within by Father Thomas Dubay.
This book will give you information about the nature of Spiritual Direction, what it is and what it is not, what to look for in a Spiritual Director, and what to do if you cannot find a Spiritual Director.
It is required reading, in my view, for all Catholics.
After reading that book, you can start to look and ask around in your city about priests, religious, or laity that may be able to act as a Spiritual Director. Be careful that whoever you find is a good, loyal, and obedient Catholic. There are MANY spiritual directors, ESPECIALLY in Retreat Houses, who are liberals and not in communion with Rome.
We will be in prayer for you to find the spiritual director you need.
