Faith/Spirituality Forum: Morals
Morals QUESTION from Cheryl Kent April 1, 2001 I have been a Christian for 18 yrs. Lately have been very drawn to the Catholic Church.I do not know if it is possible for me to become Catholic. I have been divorced, also have had an abortion years ago. I do feel God has forgiven me, I do not forgive myself.. My Question, Could i become a Catholic with these sins in my past? I hope you will answer because i would like to go further with my call to the Catholic Church. I just want to see if it is possible. Thank you for your answer,
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, OLSM on July 8, 2001 Dear Mrs. Kent:
Yes, it is possible for you to become Catholic.
When an already Baptized adult wishes to convert to the Catholic Church, just before Conformation they will have First Confession. At first confession, you have an opportunity to confess any and all sins that you have not yet brought to God for forgiveness, and it also does something else, something wonderful....... It heals.
Even though you have already asked God for forgivenness for the abortion and received that forgiveness, it can be very beneficial to bring that to your First Confession anyway. The Sacrament of Confession is much more than merely confessing sins, it is about healing the soul. The Sacrament can go a LONG way in helping you heal your soul.
As for being divorced, that is not a problem AT ALL if you are not now married. If you are currently married then you will need to discuss with the parish priest of the parish Church you plan on going to for your conversion about having the Church investigate your previous marriage(s) for a possible anulment. This process, too, tends to be a healing one.
The process of anulment may take up to the year or so depending on the backlog of cases at your diocese, but it is worth it. It gives a real sense of closure and a wiping clean so that you can go forward with a marriage blessed by the Church and able to fully participate in the Great Sacramental Life that can be yours as a Catholic.
We will be praying for you.
