Pope QUESTION from M. Sponer February 23, 2000 Greetings John Paul,
Does the pope(s) recieve a salary? I know our local priests recieves one, curious. Thank you
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, O.L.S.M. on February 25, 2000 Dear Mr. Sponer:
That is an interesting question. I don't know.
I would suspect that the Pope is taken care of much like I am -- as a dependent of religious community. I do not have a paycheck, whatever my needs might be are taken care of by the community. I am allowed a small personal stipend, however, that I may use for person use such as Christmas present to my family.
I would suspect that the Pope situation is more along that model of a religious community than it is with a diocesan priest.
A diocesan priest, who is a secular priest, is given a place to live, various allowances for housing, car expense, etc., but is given a paycheck which must manage his expenses in a way not unlike a secular person who may have housing and other special perks from his corporation.
I really don't know, but I would think the Pope follows a more monastic model in terms of his person finances.
