Questions from a simple mind QUESTION from Olga Trimboli November 7, 2000 May the Lord's Peace be with You, Brother John-Paul,
My face illuminated when I stumbled upon your site. Thanks so much for all the needed information on LOTH! I've read each question and answer, yet still have a few of my own. Let me preface them by saying I've just started praying LOTH this past Lent, coming from a Ukrainian Catholic (in union with Rome) background where Mass was in Ukrainian and not Latin.
1. Is there a translation of the Latin text to English for the hymns and Antiph. to BVM?
2. Is there a prescribed time/place to read the lovely poetry in Appendix IV?
3. In the Proper of Saints for On the same day... (10/16, for example), should all the prayers/readings be combined so as to go through the liturgy once, or should the liturgy be prayed for each separately?
4. Where would I find the 1st reading for the Office of Readings on 10/2?
5. If a day's memorial/feast is the same level as the next day's, and there is both an Evening Prayer II for the first day and an Evening Prayer I for the next day, which should I pray?
Thanks so much for your patience with me. I eagerly await your 14 session LOTH tutorial. May our Dearest Lord bless you always, Olga
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, O.L.S.M. on January 22, 2001 Dear Mrs. Trimboli:
Thanks for you kind words. I hope that our site may continue to be of use to you. On your questions....
1. Is there a translation of the Latin text to English for the hymns and Antiph. to BVM?
Yes, the English translations are contained in the English editions of the LOH books. For example, in Vol III that we are using now, on pages 1288-1290 at Antiphons to the BVM. It includes English and Latin. (In the Catholic Book Publishing One Volume edition, these are found at pp. 1056-1057; and in the Daughters of St. Paul On Volume at p. 1042)
2. Is there a prescribed time/place to read the lovely poetry in Appendix IV?
In private recitation of the Divine Office, the poems may be recited in place of the hymns at the beginning of each Office.
3. In the Proper of Saints for On the same day... (10/16, for example), should all the prayers/readings be combined so as to go through the liturgy once, or should the liturgy be prayed for each separately?
Neither. On 10/16/2000 the named saints are optional thus you have three choices: 1) prayer the regular office; 2) pray the office in honor of St. Hedwig; or 3) pray the office in honor of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. You do not combine these, but choose only one of these three options as you desire.
4. Where would I find the 1st reading for the Office of Readings on 10/2?
October 2nd is the Feast of the Guardian Angels. In the 4 vol set, Reading 1 is on page 317 and Reading 2 is on page 1453
5. If a day's memorial/feast is the same level as the next day's, and there is both an Evening Prayer II for the first day and an Evening Prayer I for the next day, which should I pray?
Evening Prayer I is the Vespers on the Vigil of Sunday or a Holy Day of Obligation. So Evening Prayer I is said the night before the Holy Day. Evening Prayer II is said on the same day as the Holy Day.
Thanks so much for your patience with me. I eagerly await your 14 session LOTH tutorial. May our Dearest Lord bless you always,
Thanks. My illness has delayed things quite a bit as you can tell in the long delay in answering this question. But I hope to have that course done by summer (I hope).
