Historical Jesus QUESTION from Dorothy March 18, 2000 I am interested in learning more about the Historical Jesus. It is my understanding that there is a big war amongst theologians, Catholics, Christians, and Scholars regarding the real existence of Jesus. I am very interested in learning the Catholic response to these studies. These studies are very current. If you are aware of any sources where I might find more information on this subject, I would be most appreciative. Thank YOU
ANSWER by Mrs. Suzanne Fortin, B.A. on March 19, 2000 Dear Dorothy
Your question concerns studies conducted by Bible scholars. As this is not my field of expertise, I can only give you a laywoman's opinion. As far as I know, the Church does not make the distinction between the Jesus of History and the Christ of Faith. They are one and the same. It is people of a secular liberal mindset who make the distinction, because their relativist values cannot allow their faith to inform their research, as if Faith was not really a body of knowledge, but a series of consoling myths that have no relation to reality, except for their psychological insights.
For more information on this subject, I recommend that you inquire at the Scripture and Tradition forum.
Thank you for your question Suzanne Fortin
