Liturgy & Liturgical Law Forum: Breaking of the altar bread

by Catherine Frakas 06 Feb 2001

Breaking of the altar bread QUESTION from Howey December 9, 2001
Holiday greetings Mr. Slavek.
One of our local priests has begun to break the altar bread, he uses the 6 inch size, in half just before the essential words of the consecration.
Your comments as to illicet or invalid please.
Thank you for work you put into this forum.
Duane.
ANSWER by Mr. Jacob Slavek on December 14, 2001
Dear Duane,
This practice is illicet but valid.
It is called anticipating the fraction. The Host is not to be broken until what the missal calls the Breaking of the Bread, which is the point at which the Lamb of God is said or sung. Breaking at any point prior is illicet.
Mr. Slavek
