Liturgy Forum: Here comes the bride

by Catherine Frakas 27 May 2001

Here comes the bride QUESTION from Christina Owens January 18, 200 I am planning my wedding for April 21st and am in the process of selecting wedding music. Is it true that you are not allowed to use Wagner's here comes the bride?
God Bless Christina
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, O.L.S.M. on March 12, 2001 Dear Miss Owens:
I believe that the traditional Here Comes the Bride is discouraged in Catholic weddings because while this musical piece may have been sacred at one time, it is no longer. The piece has become pedestrian and thus has lost its sense of sacredness. The music to be used in a sacred ceremony such as a wedding needs to be solemn sacred music befitting the sacred nature of the event.
Thus I would recommend that you begin your marriage with a ceremony truly befitting the sacredness of what you are about to do. Marriage is a sacred thing.
We will be praying for your upcoming marriage.
