Ordinary of the Mass QUESTION from Adrian G. Bruley May 7, 2000 In my parish there seems to be an on-going experiment in musical presentations of parts of the Ordinary of the Mass. From time to time the Gloria, Sanctus and the Agnus Dei are sung to different arrangements giving them a totally different feeling and causing many in our community to remain silent. My question then is: Should the parts of the Mass that are sung, be sung in a Gregorian chant form? I really don't know how to explain it but for years I sung in an unaltered, plain way that is very familiar and worshipful for me. Thank you.
ANSWER by Mr. John Miskell on May 7, 2000 Dear Adrian,
While the documents do give preference to Gregorian chant it seems that other arrangements are also allowed. I completely understand your frustration though. It's so difficult to be a part of the active participation of the Mass when I don't have a clue as to what we're singing or how we're singing it.
God bless,
John Miskell
