Deacons kneeling during the Consecration (and other interesting law) QUESTION from Ian February 17, 2000
Mr. Miskell, I just received a letter from the Congregation for Divine Worship responding to several questions I had sent last year. Here are some of the more important answers (paraphrased): 1)The deacon is supposed to kneel during the consecration. The GIRM and the COB (Ceremonial of Bishops) are not contradictory. The GIRM simply points out where the deacon should be located but does not assume that he will be standing at this time. 2) The 1968 norms concerning which Eucharistic Prayers are to be used when are still in force. This means that EP II should only be used on weekdays and EP I and IV are the primary ones for Sundays. The addition of other prayers since then does not affect the regulations concerning the original four. 3) When the COB has more specific rubrics than the GIRM, its specifics take precedence even during normal Masses. 4) Unity candles and any other additions to the marriage rite that are not found in the actual rite of marriage may not be allowed during the rite unless they have been approved by both the bishops' conference and the pope. Hope these answers help you out. Ian ANSWER by Mr. John Miskell on February 21, 2000
